Full House at Fraunhofer

Press release / 10.7.2015

Fraunhofer USA - Open House Event - Center for Laser Applications, Plymouth, Michigan

A record number of people attended Fraunhofer’s Laser Applications Center for their annual open house event which was held in conjunction with the Advanced Laser Applications Workshop (ALAW) on June 3rd.

Over 150 people enjoyed traditional German food and beverages while taking advantage of the unique opportunity to network and view the latest state of the art laser applications technology from Fraunhofer.

For the first time in North America, Fraunhofer exhibited its new COAXwire™ laser processing head capable of 3D additive manufacturing using metal wire where 100% material utilization can be achieved when building 3D metallic structures. This state of the art processing head provides coaxial laser beam delivery so that the wire deposition material can be delivered centrally to the process enabling multi-directional wire deposition for additive manufacturing.

There was also a great deal of interest in Fraunhofer’s new camera based process monitoring system for laser welding where laser beam keyhole and melt pool behavior can be observed in outstanding clarity.

In addition, Fraunhofer demonstrated a new remote welding system with seam tracking capability using the latest technology from Blackbird / Lesmuller.

Furthermore, Fraunhofer's color marking technology was showcased where metals such as Stainless Steel and Titanium can be marked in a range of different colors using a scanned pulsed laser beam.

Fraunhofer’s latest processing head for Internal Diameter Laser Cladding technology was shown where Diode lasers up to 6kW can be used for depositing wear and corrosion resistant coatings inside tubes, pipes and hard to reach part locations.

High speed solid state laser cutting using Fraunhofer’s 6 Axis TRUMPF TruLaser Cell 7040 machine was also demonstrated.

Fraunhofer’s Annual Laser Applications Center Open House event runs every year in conjunction with the Advanced Laser Applications Workshop (ALAW) and provides a unique opportunity to network with industry peers and to view live demonstrations of the latest laser technology.
